Matt Monarch, Raw Food Expert Shares His Experience With Sex And Love On A Raw Food Diet
By Kevin Gianni
This is Kevin Gianni, and I’d like to welcome you to a very special Raw Summit Teleseminar, which can be found online at
http://www.rawsummitarchives.com. Today, I have a special guest who has been a 100% raw for over 7 years and is the author of Raw Spirit, a book on transitioning and thriving with the raw food lifestyle. He will be sharing with us information on under and over eating, energy, sex and love on a raw food diet.
Raw Summit Excerpt with Matt Monarch, a raw food specialist and author of Raw Spirit.
Kevin: How are your energy levels?
Matt: My energy levels are completely excellent. I’ve more energy now than I ever had in my entirely life.
Kevin: What exactly is this kind of the systematically under eating that you talk about in the book? Is that a little of bit different?
Matt: Systematically under eating is when you just get enough food to maintain in a sense. This is kind of like fasting. This is like your body detoxifying. So, I look at hunger as a detoxification regulator; let me give you another example, if you were to take a cocaine addict that does cocaine twice a day, they’re going to crave it twice a day. If they go down to once a day they’re going to go through withdrawal symptoms. They’re going to detox so they want that fix and it is the same thing with food.
So, in essence systematically under eating is if I’m eating 3 meals a day and I’m eating a certain amount of this meal every single day that’s what most people do everyday. Eating less than that amount to where you still have a bit of hunger and you have more energy and then as you to continue to do that, your body is going to continually push you forward and then you’re going to continually need less and less food. This is kind of what systematic under eating is and this is like a really key tool for longevity.
Kevin: Okay and this is just part of transitioning or just all the time?
Matt: Well, I mean it is a good goal to aim for. I mean we’re totally going into advanced stuff here; for example when I first became raw, you will not believe what I was eating. David Wolf talks about eating 9 avocadoes; was doing the same thing. I was actually at the lecture and then there’s this man who went 100% raw, lost 50 pounds, was doing amazing, was healing from the degenerative diseases and during the lecture, he raises his hand and he confesses it to the entire room he (would) eat a jar of almond butter everyday and then pass out. At some point you’re going to need to gain responsibility to get the full benefit of the raw food diet. Just like I’m not eating like 4 avocadoes anymore, this guy isn’t eating a jar of almond butter.
Kevin: Right!
Matt: So, when I first become raw; I almost have this no-holds-barred attitude. I went crazy over eating.
Kevin: Right! So, what are you over eating?
Matt: Let me tell you what my typical evening meal was. I would take two huge salad huge bowls and put them right in front of me, and then, I would take a huge head of Romaine lettuce and cut it up to shreds and put them in one of the bowl, and then maybe squeeze them some lemon on top of that.
In the other bowl, I would go to the California Farmers’ Market where this heirloom tomatoes are. They taste like fruit practically.
I would literally take like 10 of these tomatoes, cut them up and then maybe throw dole this salty seaweed and just put amount of that on top of the tomatoes. Maybe with some olives and I would take 3 large avocados. I’m not talking about the avocado you get from whole foods. I’m talking the Farmers’ Market avocados that are enormous. I would put them all on top of that Romaine lettuce and lemon in that other bowl. And I would just squeeze it with my hands until it is became nothing, and then I would take the other tomatoes and the dole, and olives and I would pour that on top of that. This is the most amazing food. And I literally eat that every single night, probably for 3 years. That’s how I did it. That’s how I went raw.
Now these days, I would never do more than one avocado. But that’s what they have to do. I mean people have to look and you know worry about, are you now doing too much fruit. A lot of people tend to do it. They overdo the fruit and they come into issues in the long run.
Kevin: Yes, what are some of those issues with the overdoing?
Matt: What happens is sugar is an ideal ingredient for fermentation, and when you’re continually eating sugar like that, you develop fermentation and your body becomes overly acidic as the years go by. Your body starts to leak alkaline salt from the skeletal frame, and people start running into tooth erosion who eat a lot of fruit. I see it all the time.
And people’s hair has fallen out. I notice when I eat a lot of fruit, I start to smell. I’m running like a 100 miles per hour. You can get away with more fruits if you’re going to be exercising massive amount because you’re using the energy.
Kevin: What are some of the eating disorders that some raw foodist experience?
Matt: Okay, I never had a food issue in my entire life, when I became 100% raw certain things started to happen. I was like an alien in my own body; it is like I belong to another planet. And there were times I would just over eat trying to fill my stomach up, trying to get that feeling I used to get when I eat cooked food. And then sometimes I would start doing that with fruits, sugar fruit. You take a bite off a persimmon or a fresh fig coming straight from a free. It is so amazing that sugar hit you and then you just can’t stop eating it especially a new eon like myself in to the raw food movements 7 years ago. I would just eat it until my stomach was out ten feet. And you know, that causes a situation in your system. You wouldn’t want to be around me for 2 days probably because of all the gas that would be imitating from the system would be crazy.
So, what would happen is, I would get these feelings in my stomach, and after a while I don’t want to experience anymore; I want it to be in public. So, I would tell myself, “I’m not going to over eat on fruit this time”. And you know, what would happen? I would start eating a lot of fruits and I couldn’t stop myself. It wasn’t my decision to make, I guess.
The true problem about it all was the fanaticism I was going through. When I first became raw, I was still fanatical. I never went to a raw-food restaurant. I wanted to have the perfect digestion I possibly could. I never did a bad food combination for the first 4 years.
It was crazy. It wasn’t healthy. Then after about 4 years, Dr. Fred Bisci and a good friend of mine Pam Ethan, kind of broke me in the sense.
Kevin: What are some of the things that they said to you that kind of lighten you up a little bit?
Matt: Every once in a while it will be like Matt, you know you’re kind of fanatical about it. And I would just be sitting in there like – Whatever. He would just lead by example, and I just started hanging out with them more and more and soon I eat one in raw-food restaurant and okay, this isn’t too bad. Before I knew it, I was eating mounds and mounds of raw junk. So, if I ever even go to a raw food restaurant now, I get a runny nose. I mean, I don’t kill myself over; I just deal with it. But it was a 180 for me because I went the other extreme in a sense. I would over eat on raw-food restaurant all the time. And then, I start eating cacao, that was…
Kevin: Tell me about that. The cacao. You have like a giggle behind it, and I want to know what that was about.
Matt: Alright. Cacao. I love cacao. When I gave my girlfriend a cocoa, watch out! You know what I’m talking about. I make sure that I have all my stuff all the time and so, when I kind of did the cacao in massive amounts for about a month it was stimulating me to the point of where it was giving me the vitality to give off excess toxins. So I stop doing cacao and I noticed now that whenever I do it, it is almost like a party dress for me. It’s like what wine used to do for me. Yes. So, if someone is eating a massive amount, if they’re eating cacao in replace the refined sugar, I’d rather see someone do that.
And some people don’t have problems with the cacao. But some people do. Those types of people got to be careful and I’m afraid there are a lot of people can’t handle that sort of type of thing.
Kevin: Right, you know the stimulant of it or just some…
Matt: Yes, yes. The stimulant of it. Some people might have ADD issues and its does not work with their structure for some reason but some people are fine with that. I mean some people take it too far.
Kevin: Yes. So, you pressed briefly on sex and the raw diet and it’s in your book…
Matt: Yes.
Kevin: That’s a cool topic. Let’s get into this. Why don’t you tell me a little about that?
Matt: When I was a cooked-food eater I was more of like a wild animal in a sense, not that I’m not now but it was more of like every girl that walk by me, I check out her behind, I would be nonstop doing like 360s around…
Kevin: Uh-huh.
Matt: And to be honest with you, every single day, I actually took care of myself. I had this need to ejaculate.
So, when I became 100% raw, I went through a complete transformation. Now, when I look at a woman, it’s more of like a looking at a work of art in a sense. And I’m not so crazy about it and also, my desire for ejaculation has decreased.
Kevin: Interesting.
Matt: Now, don’t get me wrong, when I’m with my woman. Yes, I mean there’s no stopping me.
Kevin: Right.
Matt: But I’m just more of the way I think we were meant to be. It’s more of a love thing now.
Kevin: Okay and you think that’s the direct relation between the food?
Matt: Definitely. You have to be doing the raw food diet correctly to experience this thing the way you’re supposed to be experiencing it.

Everything You Need To Know About Fruit Salads
By Low Jeremy
Most of the people know only one thing about fruit salads; and that is how to eat them. How could you eat something that you know nothing about? Well, aside from the fact that they are delicious?

- by Dinner Series under CC BY
- Fruit Salad Raw Food Recipes
A fruit salad is a delicious dish with different kinds of fruit, sometimes served submerged in their own fruit juice, or lathered with syrup. It is oftenly served as an appetizer, if not that, dessert. Eitherway, fruit salads are definitely delicious, you can have them for both appetizer and dessert.
Making your own fruit salad is not hard; you just need to prepare its ingredients. And the ingredients used are neither extinct nor hard to find, you can just whip out your wallet and make the march to the nearest grocery store.
It needs one pint of basket of fresh California strawberries, which you are supposed to stem and make into halves; a teaspoon of finely chopped fresh mint or a half teaspoon of dried mint; a half cup of light sour cream; lettuce leaves; a half teaspoon of honey; two cups of fresh fruits that are in season. See? These ingredients do not require you to go hiking up in the mountains, looking for exotic fruits.
For you to make a strawberry dressing, you must puree an ample amount of the strawberries in an electric bender, about a half-cup, to make a Ό cup of pureed strawberries. In a separate bowl, stir the puree, together with mint and honey, into a sour cream so that they will all blend. In assembling your fruit salad, line individual salad plates that contain lettuce. Arrange the strawberries that you have reserved with the other fruits on the lettuce and top with the strawberry dressing. Sounds good, huh? You could bet that this tastes even better.
Yes, you now know how to make a fruit salad after knowing the necessary ingredients. But still, do you know where fruit salads came from? This is added knowledge, thus, it would be best if you keep this pieces of information in your memory.
The origin of fruit salads relies highly on what you initially mean by “fruit salad”. Fruit salads that are made up of combinations of different fresh, dried, candied or sugared, and stewed fruits or vegetables. This type of fruit salad originated from the ancient times. The ingredients and the recipes that are used depended on what were available in the country, or if what ingredients were in season. They also depend on the socio-cultural attitudes of the people toward the ingredients, whether the fruits were socially considered to be healthy or not.
The fruit salad, as we know of it today, is a production of the mid-nineteenth century. There has been unearthed culinary evidence that confirms the saying that sometimes, fruits salads are purposely mixed with sugar and alcohol, thus, given the term “fruit cocktail”. The non-alcoholic variation of this recipe, also the jellied fruit salad, was famous in the 1920s. In the period of the World War II, fruit salads were introduced to the world as a proper supplement of Vitamin C, and were, in fact, included in the American diet.
However, fruit salads in the European countries evolved quite differently. The recipes contained amounts of mayonnaise. Have you heard, or better yet, eaten a Waldorf salad? Well, this is the name of the said fruit salad that is lathered with mayonnaise.
Now is the time when you can say that you know everything you need to know that concerns fruit salads. Fruit salads contain one hundred twenty-three calories, two grams of protein, eleven milligrams of cholesterol, four grams of fat, and twenty-one grams of carbohydrates. What more can you ask for?

Brendan Brazier, Living Foods Author & Athlete Discusses Foods And Stress
By Kevin Gianni
This interview is an excerpt from Kevin Gianni’s Raw Food Summit which can be found at http://rawsummitarchives.com. In this excerpt, Brendan Brazier shares more specifics on the way foods can either provide or deplete energy and the effects of stress.
Raw Food Summit Excerpt with Brendan Brazier, tri-athlete thriving on living foods, author, speaker and the creator of a meal replacement formula.
Kevin: So, you talked about what you do before a race, I mean I remember in high school we used to have posh parties the night before. What is the better option than loading yourself down with processed wheat?
Brendan: There are now a lot of better options but, yes, it’s funny and people still do that. I don’t change my diet before a race at all. I just continue to eat really good, clean foods. I’ll just have a big salad and then, one of the really important things is to make sure you eat the right stuff right after exercise to rebuild. So, before, I just make my own energy bars that’s why I have the Vega bars that developed out of what I used to make and really simply you just throw everything in the food processor, dates and some proteins, some flax and… it’s really simple. And I actually even have the recipes for the bars in the new book.
I would spend maybe 60 to 90 minutes once every 4 months to make a huge batch, cut them up individually, wrapped them, put them in a freezer and just grab one on the way out each day. It was really simple ingredients, aren’t that expensive and that was a total of like four hours a year of food preps, so it’s not exactly a big commitment.
They digest these well, they’re really easy on the stomach and you’re not having all that processed foods that actually rob you of energy but give you that false impression that it’s giving you energy. Some of the energy bars, ironically enough, are the most energy robbing foods there are out there.
Kevin: Yes. And why is that?
Brendan: Because of the processed ingredients. High fructose corn syrup is one of them that you’re body has an incredibly hard time turning into usable fuel. it’s trying to digest that and it’s so artificial that the body doesn’t even recognize it as a nutrient type of food. It’s just pure stimulation.
Kevin: And it is just the high fructose corn syrup? I mean, even some of the other ones, you know sugar and soy too.
Brendan: Yes, absolutely. Soy is in so many things and I know a few vegetarians who use to eat soy every meal and have actually developed sensitivities to it.
I did actually find in research that more people are becoming vegan in North America than ever before, but fewer people are sticking with it. The theory is that because there’s so many options now for meat alternatives like there’s soy hotdogs, soy hamburgers, tofu ice cream but then at the end of the day, they’re still not that healthy. Sure, they’re better than the meat version but they’re not great food. They’re good for transition. I think they do have their place. But then, I would caution people against staying on those and really once you have transitioned. The reason people aren’t sticking with vegan diet is because they are not feeling good on them, because they are not healthy diet food. It can very easily be said now that there are vegan junk food options out.
Kevin: I used to know a vegetarian who had a bagel and lettuce and onion and tomato and that was her lunch. She was always sick and it was sad. You talked about these soy products and you talked about all the foods that are coming out, even the fruit bars and the energy bars, what are you looking for and what do you know is good and what do you know is bad?
Brendan: Well, I’ll try and keep things pretty simple. I’m, when it comes to eating, I’m really simple to feed. I just eat lots of fruit and vegetables and try and avoid packaging as much as possible…
Kevin: Okay.
Brendan: But it’s difficult because we’re all starting in a different situation and there are some people who use standard American diet for 30 or 40 years but are genuinely interested in a healthier way now because they realized they have to do something about their diet. But the chances of them going raw or even vegan or even partially raw or vegan overnight is very, very slim for them to experience success on that.
When I talk with people about this, I usually try and just let them know that transitioning is fine and it may take a year and that’s fine because if it sticks, then it’s great, when you actually start wanting to eat the foods that are healthy for you and you lose the taste for the ones that aren’t, that’s the greatest place to be. And I think that some of the soy products are okay for transition, but just the caution is to know that they are for transition and get off them once you’re beyond that.
Kevin: I don’t imagine there are many people in this call who train as much as you do or did, but I imagine there are people on the call who would find value in what you do on a regular basis, how you train and what you eat on a regular basis throughout the day, so can you take us through a day and just kind of tell us you know what you doing and what kind of food you eat?
Brendan: Yes, sure. On a typical day, when I was training lows I would swim in the morning about four and a half kilometers pretty early in a day. Before that I would have usually half an energy bar, the ones that I just make for myself and a food processor for really basic. Get home from that, I would have usually a smoothie with quite a bit of fruit and oat mixed vega in there to have all the protein, essential fats, fiber, greens, all of that, and that would pretty much do it after the swim workout. Then I would go for a bike ride or depending on the day. I might have a nap after that if it’s going to be a really long day, but usually I’d just get on my bike ride anywhere from four to five hours. As I ride, I would drink a sport drink that I would make for myself. Really basic, the recipe is in the tried diet as well but I really want to avoid of course Gatorade and things that are full of high-fructose, corn syrup, artificial flavor and color and seems funny that there are so many sport drinks out there and all the ones I’ve seen are really not very healthy. So making my own seem like a good option and it’s really easy.
People often ask about that but it’s really just easy. I use coconut water as a base from young coconut and you can either just buy the coconut pack, or you can buy a tetra pack that has young coconut water and it is pasteurized if it’s in a tetra pack so it’s not raw but you can find one that have just 100% coconut water and that’s the only ingredient, so it’s still a pretty good option if you don’t happen to have your machete on you to open the coconut. And that would become the base of my sport drink and I’d blend in a date and a bit of lemon and lime zest just like with the jellies I talked about before but just have more liquid.
Kevin: Just zest, no juice?
Brendan: Sometimes squeeze a little juice in there too and a bit of sea salt or even a bit of dull seaweeds. Some people have a hard time getting their head around drinking, but they actually didn’t even taste it. I would just have it in a very small amount or just taste a little bit salty, and it was really good and it has lots of electrolytes in it which what you sweat out. Of course you don’t just sweat water, you sweat magnesium, potassium and other electrolytes so replacing that with dulls is a really good way do it as well. So I drink that as I rode and often at the end of that I would then have some usually another smoothie with quite a bit of protein, essential fats, all of that.
Kevin: Also have some seed in it.
Brendan: Yes, yes. Some seeds are good and then later on that night I would have a big salad, have avocado, lots of super additives, lots of seaweed, all kinds of different lettuce, sometimes some kale ripped up in there and really load up that in. That has quite a lot of protein. I think sometimes people don’t realize how much protein you got from greens. Spinach for example has almost 50% protein, around 45% and it’s such high quality that you’re getting a significant amount of protein to rebuild muscle tissue.
Kevin: Wow! And now you are burning about how many calories you think a day?
Brendan: I was probably burning around 5000 but the thing is as you’re body get used to this training and adapts, it burns fewer calories. The more fit you get, the fewer calories you burn. That’s important for an endurance test, like they don’t want to burn more than you have to. It’s all about conservation and economy, really.
Kevin: That’s one of the biggest challenges I think, a lot of people think that it’s about powering through and powering through an exercise work out too.
Brendan: Right. A lot of people and think okay, this is the week that I’m really going to get fit and healthy. I’m going to go and start this big workout routine and they do way too much too soon. Any kind of change is stress and this is true for exercise or even changing the way you eat. Even though it’s a positive change, too much too soon is going to be a stress. You got to start slow and just ease into it. Let your body adapt. There has to be physiological changes to take place and don’t try and do it overnight. The odds of sticking with it throughout the rest of your life is far greater than if you just jump into it and create all kinds of muscle soreness and can actually really injure yourself as well.
Kevin: Let’s go over some of the symptoms of too much stress again. Lack of sleep is one of them, what are some of the other ones?
Brendan: Yes. The first symptoms of stress are ones that most of us experience – trouble sleeping, sugar craving, starch craving, a bit of weight gain, trouble losing body fats, irritability, mental fog, just general fatigue, even headache, even bloating, mouth-flu like symptoms, all those things. It’s different for everyone but even in some cases, rashes, people will have skin irritation. I like to actually be sensitive to those things. I’m not trying to suppress them because I know that they’ll just manifest themselves and quite possibly crop up as a serious disease later. If you pay attention to the warning signs of stress then you’re much better off and instead of drinking coffee if you’re tired, clean up your diet and maybe get a little better quality sleep which will just happen when your diet is better.
